Lumbar radiculopathy, also known as sciatica, refers to pain that originates along your lumbar spinal nerves or sciatic nerve. This sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body; its length spans from the back of the pelvis to the back of the thigh. In general, radiculopathy refers to the condition of nerve roots becoming pinched or damaged; this can occur in different areas of the body, but radiculopathy of the lower back is the most common type.
Those who are dealing with sciatica will likely experience lower back pain that spreads down their buttock to the back of one thigh. This pain could also travel from their buttock down to their foot. Because the affected nerves travel to the hips, buttocks, legs, and feet, an injury and/or irritation in the lumbar spine can cause a referred pain pattern in these areas as well. In severe cases, sciatica may also cause one to feel numbness and/or weakness in their limbs. If you think that you might be experiencing sciatica, give us a call today at Apex Interventional Pain & Spine!
