Facet Joint Injections
A Minimally Invasive Solution for Chronic Back Pain
What is it?
Facet joints, which are found on both sides of the back of the spine, are what connect the backbones to each other. These joints allow the body to bend and twist with a smooth range of motion. Facet joints can become painfully irritated or inflamed as a result of arthritis, injury, or degenerative conditions. As such, facet joint injections are helpful for physicians to not only diagnose the source of a patient’s pain, but also to successfully relieve pain and inflammation in the area. In some cases, facet joint injections may not provide the desired results. In these cases, your care professionals may recommend additional treatments, such as facet nerve or medial branch nerve blocks followed by radiofrequency ablation. These procedures can provide pain relief by targeting the nerves that transmit pain signals from the facet joints.
What conditions are facet joint injections used to treat?
- Spondylosis
- Arthritis in facet joints
- Osteoarthritis of spine
- Facet arthropathy
What are the results of Facet Joint Injections?
What are the results of Facet Joint Injections? After a facet joint injection, patients may feel immediate back or neck pain relief due to the anesthetic used during the procedure. However, as this anesthetic wears off after the procedure, the pain may return. The steroid from a successful injection will gradually reduce facet joint inflammation and pain over the next few days. Results can differ for each patient, but facet joint injections may provide relief from back/neck pain and inflammation for a time frame ranging from several days to several months. If needed, patients may receive up to three facet joint injections per year.
